About

Octotimeria is a race of anthropomorphic fish-reptiles that live in warm sea and ocean waters. These are tall, elegant creatures with a well-developed lateral line and marvelous reflexes. With their bodies covered with smooth skin (rarely with velvet or scales, that of a lizard), lean and graceful in stature, they feel one with the water. However, there’s no reason to think that Octotimerias don’t have the ability to live on land as well. On the contrary, they spend a lot of the time on dry land, settling islands and building great towns as well as picturesque villages..

The beak, hook-like talons and teeth, as well as long powerful arms and fast reflexes make Octotimerias amazing hunters both in the water and on land. This species prefers fish and insects as food but they also are up for some plant-based sustenance. The hunting is made easy for Octotimerias thanks to the tentacles on their bodies that grow out of their valvular tail, as well as, from under the fins located on shoulders and hips. Tail tentacles are the longest out of all of them. They can be twice as long as the Octotimeria itself. However, the feelers that grow from under the fins don’t get so big in length. Tentacles can differ both in shape and texture, varying based on how rare these features are. What’s peculiar about Octotimerias is that they are known for very quick metamorphosis processes that help their bodies adapt to different biomes. Once they come in contact with water, they switch to filtering air with their gills; their fingers become elongated and webbed. Their eyes get covered by an additional palpebral, nose and pharynx separate.

The change through adapting to the water or land environment is not the only type of metamorphosis Octotimerias undergo. Depending on necessity, these creatures can change (or fully get rid of) their biological sex. Their reproduction is similar to spawning: once a year eggs develop, which, after a successful fertilization, will gestate. Parents carry the eggs in a special sack, located a little bit lower of the stomach area. After the egg(s) develop into baby(-ies), they stay in the same sack for some time. As a rule, the baby(-ies) leaves the parental sack after 3-4 months. Octotimerias become of age once they turn 20 years old. The lifespan of this species varies from 200 to 3000 years.

Society and History

For thousands of years Octotimerias have been a race of island-dwelling barbarians, terrorizing every living being and one another. The caste system has been the cause of many worries among the people and palace coups. Meanwhile, xenophobia and belief in one’s exclusiveness kindled numerous interracial wars and conflict. Fortunately, over time (and because of the discontent of the masses) the situation began to improve. Nowadays, Octotimerias no longer resemble formidable aggressors, but rather give the impression of peace-loving, wise creatures, whose society has come a long way from the blood-thirsty barbarism era and became a decent, relatively peaceful race. Any reminder of a cruel past is unpleasant for Octotimerias. As a result, insults referring to that, ones like “savage” or “barbarian”, are the easiest way to provoke any member of the race into a fight. Honor and respect for themselves, as well as for their people, are of extreme importance to them. The restructuring of society cost them a lot of effort, and Octotimerias will not tolerate such a low-blow insult.

Octotimerias still live by the caste system. And if earlier it implied unquestioning obedience to the superior class, and allowed those at the top of the hierarchy to abuse and rule over the other, now it has taken the form of letting each and every member of society have an opportunity to do what they want. Now a status of belonging to a specific caste is not inherited, and only implies a lifestyle and certain responsibilities that can change throughout life. Representatives of different castes can calmly communicate with each other, get an education, marry and divorce one another, etc.

At the very bottom of the hierarchy are those Octotimerias who have not decided on their caste. As a rule, these are young individuals receiving education or doing military service. Along with them are peddlers and service personnel, etc.

Sculptors, painters, poets, musicians, and other representatives of the world of art take up the caste above the previous one. These are quite popular individuals. Octotimerias love various works of art such as paintings and sculptures, and are willing to pay a lot of money to have their aesthetic needs met.

Scientists, philosophers, traders, teachers, doctors, low-level officials, and other individuals, who take active part in the life of society, belong to the next caste.

The highest caste is taken up by sultans and their families. Sultans are the only caste that can be passed down to succeeding generations.
The towns and cities of the Octotimerias are quite colorful. The architecture visually resembles a mixture of Indian and Venician style. Numerous rivers and canals provide Octotimerias with good transport accessibility, and numerous temples as well as gardens are a sight for sore eyes. Speaking of temples - this is a rather important place where Octotimerias can philosophize, reflect and meditate. The religion Octotimerias believe in is called tentangianism. According to it, the existing World has created itself. The World possesses a higher power, can change the laws of physics, chemistry, magic, etc. However, despite all its might, the World is not an animate thing. It's just a well-oiled self-made mechanism

The Undead

Not every Octotimeria is capable of becoming an undead after death. In order for them to be reborn in this new form, the desire to live must be strong to such an extent that it overshadows all other thoughts before death. In addition, the brain, spinal cord, heart and eyes must be intact. Later on, all these organs transform into tentacles, and over time fill the entire body, making the undead Octotimeria more like a walking sack with thousands of wriggling feelers.

Unlike other walking dead, undead Octotimerias retain their mind and perception of their own self, but they do not remember anything about their past life. After resurrection, they must experience one extremely negative feeling, which later becomes their aspect - the core energy that fuels their magical abilities. However, unlike living Octotimerias, whose emotions and feelings can replace one another, the undead experience the aspect-feeling constantly, which negatively affects their mental health.

Living Octotimeria fear the undead. Octotimerias that have risen from the dead can be unpredictable - they can’t control their own aspect and can harm their relatives. Many undead Octotimerias are isolated from society, sailing to the depths of lakes and seas in order to protect others from themselves. However, there are those who, on the contrary, are not afraid to show themselves to society, because the only thing that the undead retain in their memories is some of the principles of the world that were previously unknown neither to them nor to other creatures. For Octotimerias, death means unity with the surrounding world and a deeper level of knowledge about it. It is not uncommon for scientists to commit suicide in order to resurrect in the future and bring new knowledge to their people from the “other side”. However, such Octotimerias can be counted on one hand - even if all the conditions necessary for resurrection are met, there is no guarantee that they actually come back from the dead.

You can visually distinguish the undead Octotimerias from the normal ones only when the former has its metamorphosis activated. When immersed in water, the subdermal tentacles begin to noticeably move, the coloration of the skin becomes more faded and plain-looking, the pupil disappears and the eyes begin to emit an eerie white glow. On land, at most undead can open their jaws. This way, the tips of the tentacles will be visible, poking out of the pharynx. The undead ones can also have unusual tail shapes, tentacles, fins, etc.
